Albert Bitran was born in Istanbul and came to Paris as a young man, where he became part of the circle around the École de Paris. In his painting, structure and geometry meet a freer, more lyrical abstraction.

In "Composition d’une nature morte" from 1958, the still life remains as a suggestion rather than a description. The painting is built from relationships between tone, surface, and form, with a restrained colour palette and a quiet but clear presence.
