Beskrivning

(EVELYN, JOHN). Sylva, Or, A Discourse of Forest-trees, and the propagation of timber in His Majesty's Dominions. As it was Deliver'd in the Royal Society the XVth of October MDCLXIV upon Occasion of certain Quaeries Propounded to that Illustrious Assembly by the Honorable the Principal Officers, and Commissioners of the Navy. To which is annexed Pomona or, an appendix concerning Fruit-Trees in relation to Cider, the making and several ways of ordering it... Also Kalendarium Hortense or, Gard'ners almanac... London, Jo. Martyn and Ja. Allestry for the Royal Society, 1664. (3 parts in 1).

Folio. (300x190 mm.). (16), 120; (2 of 4?), 1-50, (4), 55-83 pp. (with the licence leaf before title (A1), with errata leaf present, the "Animadversion" leaf bound after Pomona (C4). "Sir Paul Neiles second paper" leaf not present, without cancel leaf H1 as usual and without printed instruction to the binder.
Head title in red and black, but with the engraved vignette (of the Royal Society coat-of-arms) cut out, repaired tear and partly soiled. Separate titles for Pomona and Kalendarium Hortense (in red and black). Woodcut illustrations of implements at P4, one additional woodcut illustration.
Full leather binding, partly worn with renovated corners and spine, new title label. Text dampstained throughout, from beginning to page 20 only to margins, afterwards also affecting text, mostly upper part, about 10 pages with more staning, some creased leaves. First free endpaper with owner's notes Rich. Phillips's Book anno 1755. Modern German bookplate of AP. According to a pencil note, bought at Maggs Bros, cat. 461 in 1925, and later at Stockholms Auktionsverk 22 March 1964 (lot 153).

First edition. Important work on trees and their management. The second part concerns fruit trees and cider.

Det finns en doft över gamla bibliotek som nästan inte låter sig liknas vid något. Som en historisk parfym som kan byta skepnad dag som natt, vinter som vår. Bakom gamla kraftiga trädörrar kan den ligga till sig som en fin flaska vin och när dörren likt buteljens kork öppnar upp för ångorna att strömma ut blir den till air av berömda vingslag, kuriösa skeenden, skrabrösa historier och lämningar efter svunna tiders vetenskapsmän, historiker, poeter, författare, en och annan kock, kartografer och en hel del andra vars ord och bilder en gång satts i tryck och därmed om inte förevigats så åtminstone gjorts odödliga för några århundraden. Allt det där går nu att uppleva hos Stockholms Auktionsverk som nu gläntar på dörrarna till den efterlängtade auktionen Böcker, kartor och handskrifter.
Här presenteras ett imponerande utbud av texter, skrifter, volymer av alla de slag, kartor och lite annat smått och gott inom fältet. Till det sistnämnda hör en miniatyrglob i fiskskinnsfodral från 1700-tal. Den är en märklig tingest och liknar inte alls Skånska Gruvornas affisch för Allmänna Konst- och Industriutställningen 1897. I den ges prov på det förra sekelskiftets både grafiska uttryck och dess reklamkonst. Tillsammans med Samuel Bournes fotografier från Indien hör de till auktionens utmarker men kan likafullt bli föremål för det största intresse. Der Türkische Schau-Platz från 1680-talet med inte färre än 137 träsnitt, är en verklig raritet. Detsamma kan sägas om volymen med Otto von Guerickes berömda hemisfäriska experiment, publicerad I Amsterdam år 1672. Den alldeles överdådiga Flora Danica om 17 volymer är ytterligare ett av auktionens toppnummer, fylld av så mycket botanik som man bara någonsin orkar.
Men detta är blott enstaka smakprov ur en auktion som rymmer en stor mängd fantastiska trycksaker tillkomna under århundraden av Gutenbergska drömmar, framåtblickande vetenskapsideal och inte minst, en hel del fantasi!
