John Ivar Berg studied at Edvin Ollers' and Otte Sköld's painting schools, as well as at the Royal Swedish Academy of Fine Arts in Stockholm 1939-1944 and during study trips to France, Greece, and Italy.

He exhibited with the artist group Sju unga in Malmö in 1942 and participated in the Swedish General Art Association's exhibitions and at Liljevalchs in 1948. In the 1950s, he participated in the Réalités Nouvelles salon.

Among his public works are a 40-square-meter mosaic in Solberga, a large stucco lustro painting in Nybohov, and an enamel painting at the Gubbängen youth hotel. For the Hudiksvall Konsum restaurant, he executed a large abstract composition in glass and artificial stone in 1949.

John Ivar Berg is represented at, among others, the Moderna Museet in Stockholm, Norrköping Art Museum, and Prins Eugens Waldemarsudde.
