Gerda Sprinchorn (1871–1957) was a prominent Swedish sculptor, educated at the Royal Swedish Academy of Fine Arts in Stockholm. Her artistry is characterized by a strong interest in people, folk life, and realistic depictions of everyday life.

Storebror was created with inspiration from Sprinchorn's travels in Finland and depicts a young Sami boy, dressed in a gákti, carrying his younger brother in his arms. Motifs from the countryside and traditional folk life were recurring in her early artistry, and Storebror is among the works that clearly reflect her interest in portraying people and their everyday lives with presence and emotion.
