Description

Signed and dated A. Ahlberg 1901. Oil on canvas 46 x 64 cm.

The royal yacht Drott was originally built as a type of minelayer.
The vessel also served as the flagship for the Commander-in-Chief of the Coastal Fleet. According to general order on February 1, 1876, the boat was named Ran and launched on July 19, 1877.
After only five years, the boat was taken out of service as a minelayer and modified to be suitable for use by the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, i.e., King Oscar II.
The boat was renamed Drott in 1883, repainted, and updated. From 1887 to 1901, the boat served as the royal family's pleasure yacht. Every summer, the King sailed with the boat to the Swedish west coast and Marstrand.

This painting by A. Ahlberg from 1901 hung for many years in the Konsert-caféet in Gothenburg. The proprietor of this temperance café was named Nanny Gustafsson. Nanny likely received the painting directly from the artist. In 1930, she gave the painting as an engagement gift to her nephew.
