Juli Ramis i Palau (1909-1990) was an influential Mallorcan painter and pioneer of abstract material painting in Spain. When he was young, he had contact with prominent artists such as Santiago Rusiñol and Joaquim Mir. In the 1920's, he began painting landscapes in Mallorca and then trained in Barcelona and Madrid, influenced by Pablo Picasso (whom he met) and international abstract art.
During the Spanish Civil War he returned to Mallorca, but in 1939 he settled in Tangier, absorbing influences from various artists and writers. In 1947, he moved to Paris, achieving worldwide fame in the 1960's. He participated in international exhibitions and biennials, mainly in Egypt, Moscow, Venice, Alexandria and Sao Paulo.
He returned to Mallorca in 1970, continuing his artistic career and receiving awards, including the Gold Medal from the Autonomous Community of the Balearic Islands. Juli Ramis left a significant legacy as a pioneer of abstract material painting in the Spanish context.
