He was born in Pärnu, Estonia in 1933, but like many of his countrymen, fled to Sweden during the Second World War. As a practicing artist, he held a fondness for surrealism, and now that Stockholms Auktionsverk presents a theme entirely devoted to Mats Loosme, it's clear the creator feared no subject.
Here, Christ is brought before both Pilate and Superman (!). Here we see landscapes with clusters of windmills that would leave Cervantes wondering what's going on. And here, purple insects crawl calmly and quietly across an imposing diptych.
In 1963, Loosme exhibited at the Stockholm Salon at Liljevalchs, and he belongs to the Baltic artists who found a new home and a new audience in Sweden. As these painters are now being rediscovered, they are once again finding a new audience.
