In a time when dusty stagecoaches crossed the prairie, silver mines lured adventurers and cities sprang up overnight, some of the most iconic coins in the United States were struck in gold and silver. We find ourselves in the second half of the 19th century, where the gold rush is in full swing and the American Civil War is a closed chapter. Stadsauktion Sundsvall has been entrusted with offering a vintage coin collection consisting of American coins with a focus on Morgan silver dollars. These iconic coins were struck in the United States between 1878 and 1904, as well as in a final edition in 1921, and are named after their designer George T. Morgan. They were created during a time when the growing silver production of the United States was to be converted into coins, and the Morgan dollar quickly became a symbol of the American West and the country's expansive economic era. The collection contains several interesting specimens, including Morgan dollars from 1879, 1880, 1890 and 1891 struck in Carson City – a mint location that is today particularly sought after among collectors due to its close connection to the silver mines of Nevada and the relatively low mintages. Among the highlights is also an American gold coin, 2½ Dollars from 1928, a so-called "Quarter Eagle", which represents another classic part of US coin history. Together, the objects in the collection provide a fascinating insight into a period when precious metals played a central role in both the economy and everyday life.
