Like so many other Baltic artists, he came to Sweden during the darkest years in Europe. Gustav Mägi, born in Narva, Estonia, was 30 years old when he arrived on the southern coast of Sweden in 1944. His artistic debut had taken place five years earlier with an exhibition in Tallinn. By the mid-1940s, Mägi was already an established name with a solid artistic education behind him.
Thanks to Gomér & Andersson Linköping, we can now enjoy this multifaceted artistic oeuvre, which, through the horrors of the Second World War, came to develop further here in Sweden. In a cohesive theme of just over 20 lots, we are given an almost kaleidoscopic view of Mägi’s world of motifs, which seems in no way constrained.
