Architect Bo André began crafting highly detailed model cars in 1995, focusing on Volvo's model range from 1954 to 1972. Initially branded as Moose Collection, his work transitioned the following year to André Models. These 1:43 scale cars (about 10 cm long) are incredibly precise replicas of Volvo's original designs. Each model is cast in white metal and coated in six layers of paint: two of primer, two of authentic Volvo paint, and two layers of clear coat. On the base of each car, the color code and model year are indicated.
The molds, painstakingly crafted from hazel wood, were based on over 1,000 millimetric measurements. After creation, the casting process, called centrifugal casting or "spin casting," was handled by a firm in England. The attention to detail is outstanding—Volvo Amazon models, for example, consist of around 30 individual parts. Wheels feature brass rims turned by Bo himself, tires made in Italy, and mirrors cast in genuine silver by a goldsmith. Some parts are etched and others chrome-plated using foil applied by hand.
At the peak of production, about 300 model cars were made annually, although production ceased some years ago. Bo André is widely regarded as one of the finest craftsmen in the field due to his precision and commitment to authenticity. Stadsauktion Sundsvall is now offering 20 cars from this exceptional collection in their theme auction.
