He is said to have been born three times. The first time was in 1906 in the Kungsholm parish in Stockholm. The second time was in the late 1950s when he abandoned his classical training. And then there was a third time that allegedly coincided with an exhibition at Liljevalchs shortly before the turn of the millennium. That time, he renounced painting in the traditional sense, although he continued to create artworks. elis ernst eriksson (consistently in lowercase letters) was a highly individualistic artist who, more than most, followed his own path, despite receiving a traditional education. In the 1930s, he first studied at the Technical School and then at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Stockholm. Many years later, after his second birth, he met Picasso in Paris. It happened in the 1960s and coincided with his public breakthrough. In the late 1980s, he had grown tired of what he was doing at the time and burned nearly twenty of his paintings, subsequently selling the ashes to the Moderna Museet.
