Modern Italian Ceramics

For a long time in Sweden, the Italian ceramics that arrived in the years following World War II were perceived as cheap and geared towards tourists. But that perception was destined to change. Once the Italian economy had recovered after the war, the country—with its long ceramic tradition—saw the emergence of an impressively rich and multifaceted output of ceramics and porcelain. While there was certainly a flood of simple souvenirs, what went unnoticed here was the innovative, modernist-inspired ware from manufacturers like Bitossi, or the high-quality pieces created by artists such as Fantoni and Gambone.

It was not until the international art world began to take notice of and document Italian ceramics from the 1950s, 60s, and 70s in the early 2000s that our eyes were truly opened. A treasure trove was waiting to be discovered. Today, Guido and Bruno Gambone, Marcello Fantoni, Aldo Londi, Bitossi, Fratelli Fanciullacci, Bagni, and many other designers and manufacturers are highly sought after by collectors in Sweden as well.
