Colour is something we all react to, often without thinking about it. A blue tone can feel calm, a strong red can make something feel intense and a warm yellow can almost make a painting shine. In art, colour is therefore much more than just something that makes a picture look nice. Colour can create emotions, tell us something about the mood and make us stop a little longer in front of a work.
In the recurring theme "The Power of Colour" we collect paintings where colour plays an especially important role. These can be landscapes that feel alive through strong contrasts, still lifes where flowers and objects get energy through the colour choices, or motifs where the artist uses colour more freely and personally. Sometimes the colour is realistic, sometimes it is more imaginative, but it always affects how we experience the picture.
Some of our favourites from this auction are...
Helmut Mantel, Landscape, oil on canvas. A colourful landscape where wide colour fields and strong contrasts create an intense and almost glowing view. The work has a clear coloristic presence and fits well into the auction theme.
Leopold Fare, Man riding a donkey, oil on canvas. An expressive and decorative composition where warm tones, clear contours and a playful style give the motif a strong character. The colour is used here both as a narrative and as a mood-creating element.
Beth Zeeh, Girls among lush trees, oil on canvas. A leafy and colourful motif where the greenery surrounds the figures and gives the painting a soft, almost dreamy atmosphere. The colour scale reinforces the feeling of summer, presence and quiet movements.
Welcome to the world of colour!
