Martin Åberg (1888–1946) is an artist that many people may not know today, but who really deserves more attention. He trained in Stockholm (Wilhelmson's painting school) and Gothenburg (Valands) and also traveled around Europe, for example to Tyrol, Florence and the French Riviera. During his lifetime, he exhibited both in Sweden and abroad, in cities such as Venice, Paris, London, Brussels and Helsinki. Despite this, his name has fallen into oblivion over time. This is actually quite strange, since his works can be found today in several of Sweden's most important museums, such as Moderna Museet, Nationalmuseum and Gothenburg Art Museum. For Åberg, the landscape was more than just something to depict, it was just as much about emotions and moods. His early paintings are more detailed and clear, but over the years the expression became clear and more personal. Together with artist friends such as Olof Ågren and Alexander Roos, he developed a more naïve way of painting. In his later works, the landscapes become freer and more expressive, but always in soft, muted colors. It is just that combination, the feeling and restraint, that makes his measurement so special.
He was often drawn to open and slightly barren landscapes, such as coastal environments with low horizons and large skies. The motifs may seem simple at first glance, but in each painting there is something unique, a special light, a stillness or a feeling that remains. It is not just about showing what nature looks like, but about how it is experienced.
Åberg was also part of a vibrant artistic life, where art was a natural part of everyday life. He was noticed early on by Prince Eugen, and both Gustaf Näsström and later Ulf Linde wrote about him with great respect. Yet he never really became known to the general public. Perhaps that is why his art feels so interesting today. Each work has its own atmosphere and together they give the image of an artist who really deserves to be discovered anew.
