Gomér & Andersson Nyköping has framed a small but precious piece of Swedish art history and now presents it under the title Ebba & Gustaf.
The subject is the sibling pair Ebba and Gustaf Böklin. Born in the 1870s, they grew up in Täckhammar, in the parish of Bärbo in Södermanland, before making their way to Paris – as so many artists of that era did. Ebba arrived first. In the French capital she studied under Märta Améen, before travelling on to London where she became a pupil of the animal painter William Frank Calderon. In the present theme we can see three dog portraits which clearly demonstrate both her interest in animal studies and her ability to capture the individuality of her canine subjects.
Her brother Gustaf arrived in Paris shortly after the turn of the century, where he enrolled at the Académie Julian. Over time he became something of a cosmopolitan, alternating his studies between Paris, Stockholm and Munich with excursions to Spain and Italy. Floral still lifes held a particular appeal for him, as becomes evident as we make our way through the auction's 27 lots.
The theme offers an excellent opportunity to acquaint oneself with not one but two artistic careers from the era when Swedish artists "went to Paris."
Welcome!
