Stockholms Auktionsverk is pleased to present a major collection comprising more than one hundred works by the sculptor Gert Marcus.
Gert Marcus (1914–2008) occupies a unique position within Swedish modernist sculpture. Through a consistent and uncompromising abstraction, he developed a formal language that combines architectural precision with a powerful spatial presence. His sculptures do not depict space; they define and activate it, engaging the viewer on both a physical and visual level.
Working in materials such as marble, steel, concrete and painted metal, Marcus created sculptures characterised by pure geometric forms, clearly defined colour fields and an exquisite balance between volume and void. Each work bears witness to a rare sense of proportion and a keen awareness of the sculpture’s dialogue with its surroundings.
The auction offers a broad presentation of his oeuvre, including robust works in stone mosaic, elegant sculptures in marble, and the late years’ colour and form studies executed in plexiglass and metal.
Born in Germany, Marcus settled in Sweden in the 1940s. Largely self-taught, he worked consistently outside established artistic movements, a position that contributed to the strongly personal nature of his expression. Alongside his studio practice, he carried out numerous public commissions throughout Sweden, including works for urban spaces and schools.
With their timeless aesthetic and immediate recognisability, Marcus’s sculptures stand out as compelling collector’s pieces and powerful elements in both private and public environments.
All works in the auction are offered without reserve.
Please note that the works are exhibited concurrently at Nybrogatan 32 and Magasin 1, Södra Hamnvägen 8. Information regarding the location of each individual work can be found in the catalogue descriptions.
