When we put up that very first advertising sign ourselves and, somewhat cautiously, mentioned that we were planning a dedicated sign auction, we had no idea what kind of avalanche of interest it would unleash. Suddenly, signs began arriving from all over the country, sent to us for photography and sale. It has been a wonderful journey to receive it all. But what is it about old advertising signs that grips us so strongly?
From a historical perspective, they are small time capsules that tell the story of how advertising evolved – from simple messages to increasingly sophisticated printing, in step with changes in technology and society. On a more personal level, it is about the magic of the details: the quirky, humorous texts, the solid craftsmanship that has stood the test of time, and those bold colours that awaken something new within us. A sense of curiosity.
Of course, the passage of time has left its mark on many of the objects. Ruthless rust has crept in here and there, laying down its patina and sometimes taking a bit of paint with it. But that is precisely what makes them even more alive – and isn’t that what we are all searching for? To feel more alive.
