For centuries, coins have played a central role in the daily life of societies around the world.
Once upon a time, the metals themselves offered intrinsic value, but for a long time now, most coins have carried agreed and fixed values regardless of material. During the Renaissance, the art of coinage flourished, and skilled engravers created astonishing designs, often featuring portraits of potentates on one side, complemented by monuments and symbols on the other.
Early in history, coins also attracted the attention of collectors, and numismatics became a field of study that drew devoted enthusiasts. At Auktionshuset Kolonn, we are now invited to explore a fascinating collection of coins of varied origin. A significant portion is Swedish, some are Russian, and here and there appear specimens from Poland, the Baltics, Austria, and the Holy Roman Empire.
Among the more than 50 lots, numerous kings and emperors are portrayed in profile, making the collection as a whole almost a Who’s Who of Western history. One of these exalted rulers is Karl XIV, depicted on a Norwegian 1/2 speciedaler in silver from 1844. Another is Adolf Fredrik, whose profile was struck in Pomerania in 1763.
But these are merely two examples from a richly detailed catalogue — one made for collectors, enthusiasts, and anyone wishing to fill their purse with something truly special.
