In connection with the Världens Barn (Children of the World) charity campaign 2025, and as part of the “Municipality Challenge” in which Älmhult municipality is participating, IKEA Museum is organizing an auction in collaboration with Auctionet and Växjö Auktionskammare. The auction opens on September 19 and closes on September 30. All proceeds will be donated in full to Radiohjälpen’s fundraising campaign for Världens Barn.
The much-loved IKEA STOCKHOLM collection was first introduced forty years ago, in 1985, with a clear focus on quality, comfort, and timeless design. The goal was to offer elegant, high-quality furniture and home décor at an affordable price. Since then, the collection has continually grown and evolved, but its essence has remained the same: to deliver high quality at a low price. Over the years, a number of renowned designers have contributed to creating pieces that in many cases have become design classics. From Tomas Jelinek and Karin Mobring, via Gunnel Sahlin, Niels Gammelgaard, and Maria Vinka to Nike Karlsson and Ola Wihlborg – to name just a few.
The objects being auctioned come with a unique provenance. Most of them were exhibition pieces from two special exhibitions dedicated to IKEA STOCKHOLM: “Fina gatan åt folket!” – a retrospective at IKEA Museum in Älmhult (April 10 – August 30, 2025), and the IKEA STOCKHOLM 2025 launch exhibition during Milan Design Week earlier this year. The items have been marked with special seals confirming their history as exhibition objects. All objects have been donated to the auction by IKEA Museum.
IKEA Museum opened in 2016 in the building that once housed the world’s very first IKEA store in Älmhult. Among other things, it features the permanent exhibition “The Story of IKEA”, presented in four parts: Our Roots, Democratic Design, Hej Ingvar!, and IKEA Through the Ages. IKEA Museum welcomes over 200,000 visitors annually and also hosts temporary exhibitions, a restaurant, and a shop.
By taking part in the auction, you not only gain the opportunity to own a unique piece of design history but also contribute to an important cause.
