We are delighted to kick off the autumn auction season with a catalogue dedicated to the ever-fascinating Sámi handicrafts. Here we witness the journey of everyday objects towards an increasingly refined artistic expression, a testament to the patience and passion required to bring these works into being. The catalogue comprises no fewer than 186 lots, broadly representing the traditional crafts that the Sámi culture has long practiced and continues to uphold. From the duodji of hard materials — knives, cups (kåsa), milk and driving sticks — to the soft crafts of bags, backpacks, and intricate rootwork. In addition, the artistry is revealed across time, allowing us to study knives and cups over a century old and compare them with their contemporary counterparts. Despite the passage of time, the original respect for the objects’ primary function as utilitarian items remains intact — a principle the craft form will likely never abandon.
The selection is further enriched by works from some of the most renowned names, past and present: Jon Pålsson Fankki, Esse Poggats, Lars Pirak, Max Lundström, Sven-Åke Risfjell, Tore Sunna, Arthur Jillker, Anders Sunna, and many more.
A most heartfelt welcome!
