The works of female artists have, throughout history, played a vital role in shaping Swedish and Nordic art – even if they long remained in the shadows.
From early pioneers to contemporary voices, they have created art that reflects both everyday life and visions, tradition and renewal.
In the 19th century, the art world was largely closed to women, but a decisive step came in 1864 when the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Stockholm opened its doors to female students. This laid the foundation for generations of artists who, despite resistance, continued to express their creative force.
This auction presents the breadth of their artistic worlds. Here we encounter Ellen Montalba’s atmospheric oil painting Through clouds and flowers, Märtha Tynell’s 1920s work Versailles, and Kajsa Dieserud’s Barren winter landscape. Alongside idyllic depictions of nature, we also find Maria Holsth’s everyday scene Picking flowers, Gertrud Stavling’s intimate still lifes, and Madeleine Pyk’s vibrant compositions.
The collection includes oil paintings, watercolours, prints, and mixed media – spanning from the 19th century to modern times. Well-known names stand side by side with artists deserving rediscovery. Together, they form a multifaceted narrative of women’s contributions to art: rich in variety, creative force, and personal expression.
