The Super Collector Per-Johan – Themed Auction No. 4: Stamps
He had around forty different collecting areas and dedicated his life to building an impressive collection – a cultural treasure that Växjö Auktionskammare is now proud to present in a series of themed auctions.
This fourth auction is devoted to Per-Johan’s extensive stamp collection. For many years, he served as chairman of both the collectors’ club Virdarna and the Växjö Philatelic Society. He played an important role in conveying the value of remembering history and what objects can mean in a memory context. He called himself a super collector and was a familiar voice on Radio Kronoberg, where he introduced various collecting themes week after week.
As he once told Smålandsposten: “Much of what I collect is driven by nostalgia – things that were around when I was little.”
Per-Johan had an almost fanatical interest in the narrow-gauge railway between Växjö and Västervik and collected items related to this line. His interests also included postcards, stamps, comic books, fire-fighting history, banknotes and coins, dog tax tags, movie tickets, FIB’s Gyllene Bok, Wahlströms youth novels, phone cards, telegrams, share certificates, train tickets and timetables, phone directories, collectible pictures, maps, medals, razor blades and razors, advertising memorabilia, radio licenses, matchbox labels, brewery labels, and much more.
Now it’s time for a themed auction focused on a major part of his stamp collection: stamps, pre-philately, postmarks, and even the occasional royal handwritten letter. Among the highlights are several early stamps, including fine Växjö cancellations, pre-philatelic covers, and rare historical pieces.
Still to come is a final themed auction featuring a wide variety of items that didn’t fit into the earlier categories – a treasure trove of exciting and unusual objects.
We wish you the best of luck in the bidding – and welcome you into the world of the super collector!
