Vera Frisén was born and raised in Umeå but later moved to Stockholm, where she began her studies at Otte Sköld's painting school. In 1941, she debuted with her first solo exhibition at the gallery Färg och Form in Stockholm. The exhibition was a resounding success, with critics unanimously praising her work—she was even described as a "Swedish Schjerfbeck." All over 70 exhibited pieces sold quickly.
Despite this initial triumph, Frisén withdrew from public life as an artist in the mid-1940s. The pressure from sales and the high expectations that followed the overwhelming critical acclaim deeply affected her, leading to a period of depression.
However, Frisén never stopped painting. Throughout her life, she consistently returned to Västerbotten, which remained a central source of inspiration for her artistry. For 45 years, she regularly visited the region to draw new inspiration and create fresh works.
In 1989, shortly before her passing, Frisén made a notable comeback with a new exhibition at Färg och Form in Stockholm. Soon after this renewed recognition, she passed away.
In recent years, Frisén has experienced a renaissance, earning her rightful place in Swedish art history. Her works have been exhibited in Malmö, Gothenburg, Öland, Stockholm, Umeå, and Luleå, consistently receiving glowing reviews and often selling out completely.
At Norrlands Auktionsverk, we are immensely proud to have been entrusted with this thematic auction. We feel privileged to finally showcase "our" Vera's creations to Umeå and the wider Norrland region in the best possible way.
