During the 20th century, Finnish painting underwent a dynamic and multifaceted evolution, shaped by the breakthrough of modernism, political upheavals, and a growing desire for individual expression.
Modernist ideas reached Finland primarily through impulses from Central Europe and the Nordic countries. Finnish painting absorbed international movements such as Expressionism, Cubism, and later Informalism and Abstract Art, while simultaneously retaining a distinctive tone of seriousness, stillness, and existential reflection—qualities one might say are inherent to the Finnish character.
Sweden’s role as a cultural neighbor and bridge to the West was of great importance for the dissemination and development of Finnish painting. Many Finnish artists studied or exhibited in Sweden, and the art scenes in both countries were closely interconnected. In the latter half of the 20th century, this bond was further strengthened through migration, as a large number of Finns settled in Sweden, contributing to an increased cultural exchange. It is precisely for this reason that we are delighted to present this collection of fine Finnish artworks for you to discover!
