Art critic. Art dealer. Patron. His titles were many. He even became the subject of an academic dissertation. To the general public, he remained a gray eminence, a mere background figure in the art world. He himself was said to have collected Renaissance art. But those who know, know that although he collected Renaissance paintings, he was perhaps more than anyone else the one who worked to elevate Helene Schjerfbeck (if only he knew what became of that!).
At Stockholms Auktionsverk Magasin 5, we get to go behind the scenes of his gallery and enjoy some of the works he acquired during his long career. Several artists—Eva Bagge, Esther Kjerner, and Bernt Ringqvist—are represented with multiple paintings. From Helmer Osslund's palette comes a delicate portrait, Egron Lundgren contributes a figure study, and there is a small landscape by Vera Frisén, among others. In total, there are 58 lots. Anything by Schjerfbeck? Yes, that popular folder from the late '40s with black-and-white reproductions is included.
Warmly welcome to Stockholms Auktionsverk Magasin 5 to get a glimpse into Gösta Stenman's world!
