Artistry can too easily be referred to as forgotten, and perhaps this isn't the right term when summarizing Edvard Andersson's life's work in a few sentences. His painting could possibly be described as a hidden gem in the art world. His biography revolves around a tobacco shop, a girls' school, and the city of Helsingborg, from which he drew various impulses from the European art scene. He received his education at the Higher School of Art and Design in Stockholm. Upon returning to Helsingborg, he took over his father's tobacco shop. In the early 1930s, it was sold when Edvard Andersson became a drawing teacher at the city's girls' school. By then, he had undertaken several study trips to Europe. His debut at Killberg's Art Salon was already completed in 1918, and following his development from that year is like holding modern painting by the hand through some of its most progressive decades.
At Stockholms Auktionsverk Helsingborg, one can see in a well-curated selection traces of and influences from continental masters as well as domestic greats. Andersson embraced the trends of his time and translated them onto canvases with results that can unequivocally be called his own. His subjects exhibit varying degrees of abstraction, and at times, one might call him a colorist. But regardless of labels, this is an artistry worth highlighting as part of Swedish modernism.
