Ernst Söderberg - 50 years or artistry

Stockholm Auktionsverk Sickla has opened its impressive gates and kicks off with an intriguing artist encounter. In a theme featuring over 80 works, we get to acquaint ourselves with Ernst Söderberg's modernist visual art.

Söderberg was born in 1889 in Hamburg and received his education as a decorative painter in Germany before coming to Sweden in the 1910s, where he studied under Carl Wilhelmson and Olle Hjortzberg. Over the following decade, he received several scholarships and spent periods abroad. Some of the highlights of the theme from this time include "The Florentine Woman" and "Self-Portrait Florence," both from 1927. In addition to several solo exhibitions of his paintings, Ernst Söderberg also engaged in sculpture, drawing, graphics, decorative painting, and notably a significant amount of stained glass painting in Swedish churches. Among his sacred works, the decoration in the bricked-up altar niche in the Katrineholm Crematorium stands out, a six-meter-high painting titled "From the Cradle to the Grave."
