Lysekils Auktionsbyrå allows us to get close to one of the more prominent but not fully celebrated artist couples during the emergence of Swedish modernism: Birger & Ingrid Simonsson. Birger Simonsson played a significant role in what would become the Gothenburg Colorism movement. After studying in places like Paris, he supervised the Valand painting school and later became a professor at the Art Academy. As an artist, he belonged to both the 1909 Men and The Eight. Alongside Gösta Sandells, he laid the foundation for the color brilliance of Bohuslän, and although his name may be somewhat overshadowed today, it always emerges when discussing the painting of that time in Gothenburg and the west coast.
In 1915, he married Ingrid Simonsson, who had graduated eight years earlier from the Higher Arts and Crafts School as a pattern designer. She had previously worked at Rörstrand Porcelain Factory, and at the 1925 Paris Exhibition, she was awarded a silver medal for her wallpaper designs. As an artist, she has somewhat faded into the background compared to her husband, but at Lysekils Auktionsbyrå, Ingrid Simonsson takes center stage. A couple of still lifes in the unauctioned material, along with her depictions of the Bohuslän coast, make a lasting impression, especially now, with the sunny days by the sea echoing into contemporary art history.
In addition to these two, a small number of works by their friends and acquaintances are featured. A charming little watercolor by Oluf Wold-Torne stands out, as does Einar Nerman's portrait of the artist Berta Strömberg. Welcome to Lysekils Auktionsbyrå!
