He is often classified as an expressionist, but his works reveal a multi-faceted expression that defies easy labeling. Gunnar Jonn was born in 1904 in Malmö. In the early 1920s, he enrolled at the Skånska Målarskolan. Later in the following decade, he studied under Aksel Jørgensen at the Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen. It is from those years that the earliest works in the collection, now offered by Limhamns Auktionsbyrå, originate.
In this collection, we encounter Jonn as an expressionist, but we also get to see him as a portrait painter and a serene landscape artist. A watercolor, "Promenade in Moscow," stands out, as does a pastel from 1959 that clearly exhibits a surrealistic touch. Welcome to explore the works of a Swedish modernist who, in addition to being associated with Skåne institutions, is also represented at the Moderna Museet.
