It was a time when one could catch sight of a John Bauer troll ambling down from the mountains on a sultry late summer evening against a backdrop of pitch-black pine trees. Nature had reclaimed its mythical essence, bringing life and substance to a world stagnated in rigid conventions. In bourgeois homes, revival styles were piled upon each other, with artisans and artists looking backward instead of forward. Then, out of nothing—or perhaps from Pre-Raphaelite ideals, Japanese expressions, or maybe nature itself—came the winding and emerging new style. In Northern Europe, it became known as Jugend, while on the continent, it was referred to as Art Nouveau.
At Stockholms Auktionsverk, we now get a glimpse into the array of objects that appeared in Swedish and European homes around and just after the turn of the last century. The variety of items and expressions highlights the diversity of the era. Naturally, Emile Gallé's pioneering glass art is represented. From the Austrian capital, a vase from the Frans Bergmann foundry is featured. Among the Swedish crafts, several pieces by Josef Ekberg in his distinctive sgraffito technique stand out. The theme also includes lamps, furniture, and much more.
