Between 1569 and 1801, Öland was what is referred to as a royal hunting institution, essentially a kind of game park for those wearing crowns on their heads. It may sound incredible, but at the same time, many throughout history have been enchanted by Sweden's second-largest island, also its smallest province. In 1972, a bridge was built from the mainland to make it easier for caravan travelers to fall in love with the "Island of Sun and Winds."
Another group that has taken a liking to the island is artists. In a long tradition, painters one by one join a list of creators who have interpreted the rolling fields, the light blue sky, and the vast coastlines.
Now, as Karlstad Hammarö Auktionsverk enters Auctionet's platform, they bring with them an extensive collection of Öland paintings. Of course, this collection includes works by Öland's native son, Per Ekström. But it also features pieces by Arthur Percy, Carl Ryd, Stig Jonzon, who combined Öland landscapes with depictions of Stockholm, Nils Kreuger, the ascetic Axel Kargel, Helge Johansson, represented here with a French 1920s landscape, Sven Svensson, several works by the etcher and painter Harald Sallberg, and many more. The aforementioned Arthur Percy is the central figure of this theme, with his fresh, very flourishing (including the occasional orange) oil paintings. His painting "Children with Flowers," signed and dated Cagnes 1921, stands out and is undoubtedly one of the highlights. All in all, it's clear that more will be charmed by Öland - and especially its art.
