How did those great composers go about it? Did they struggle through the muddy streets to open the sluggish church door and perform their fugues and symphonies under mighty arches? As observers and listeners from a few centuries away, we wonder how it all happened. Perhaps the answers lie in the instruments, in the violins and violas? Perhaps in the strings?
Stockholms Auktionsverk Helsingborg has handpicked six violins and seven bows and is now presenting them under a separate heading. One of them, a remarkable work from the second half of the 18th century, is particularly intriguing. It is made of dense-grained spruce with a maple back and sides, and it bears a label with the text "MATHIAS THIR, WEIN 1772." Some of the models were crafted during the 20th century, serving as excellent examples of how a craftsmanship tradition can be passed down through generations of skilled instrument makers.
