Signe Persson-Melin is one of our most significant designers of the 20th century. In Signe's design world, utilitarian objects have always been at the forefront, and her series "Ruben," "Kvadrat," and "Bouquet" have become enduring design classics. A home can hardly be called a home without elements of her design.
Signe Persson-Melin was born in Tomelilla in 1925. She had her breakthrough at the Helsingborg Exhibition in 1955, where her handcrafted spice jars in stoneware became a sensation. In the 1960s and onwards, she also designed utility items for Boda Nova, Rörstrand, Höganäs, Byarums bruk, and Campos Filhos Alvaraes in Portugal. In 1985, she became Sweden's first professor of glass and ceramic design at Konstfack.
The work in her own studio in Malmö and her love for the potter's wheel seemed to be an eternal source of inspiration. At the exhibition at Waldemarsudde in 2008, the artist's self-shaped and glazed vessels captured the audience's attention. As she expressed in an interview with Björn Jansson on P4 the same year: "Craftsmanship is making a comeback; if you have a lot of industrially manufactured items, you can definitely use something that feels artisanal." Signe Persson-Melin continued to work in the studio until her passing in 2022.
Crafoord Auctions Stockholm is proud to present a collection of items by Signe Persson-Melin, showcasing the breadth of her nearly seventy-year artistic career. Welcome!
