The sea and the sky as expressions of something greater. In KG Holmberg's paintings, the coastal vistas take on an almost supernatural quality. A vibrant light reminiscent of religiously inspired Baroque painting or perhaps the more magically inclined surrealism of the 20th century. It is within these spaces that we find KG Holmberg. Someone has said that he worked in the spirit of Marcus Larson, adding drama, sometimes deceptive calmness, or tension in his depiction of the environments where the sky meets the sea. Occasionally, a solitary boat sails forth, but for the most part, it is only waves and clouds interacting with each other.
Karl Gustav (KG) Holmberg was born in 1916 in Gullholmen parish in Gothenburg and Bohus County. At the age of barely 20, he began his artistic studies under Tycho Ödberg in Stockholm. He then became a student of marine painter Ragnar Olson, and in the early 1940s, he had the esteemed Isaac Grünewald as his teacher for a year. He quickly found his subject matter, which he remained dedicated to throughout his active career. Thelin & Johansson Auction House can now present 10 of his works. These predominantly come from the 1970s, a time when Holmberg's art had matured into the style we are familiar with today. However, the theme also includes two early works where we encounter an artist with a completely different palette.
