"Do you know why Sighsten Herrgård always dresses so impeccably?"
In a 1989 commercial, Sighsten Herrgård, dressed in an impeccable suit with a perfectly tied tie, addresses and confronts the pervasive fear of AIDS that prevailed in society at the end of the 1980s. With a direct gaze into the camera, he informs about the disease that was paralyzing the world at that time. He took up the fight, assumed the role of an informant, and became a face for all those affected. He was the first well-known person in Sweden to publicly announce that he had the disease. In doing so, he also became a figurehead in the battle against the then-unknown virus, as well as in the debate on intolerance and narrow-mindedness, which became an essential part of newspapers, television, workplaces, and almost everywhere.
But Sighsten Herrgård had already achieved so much more by then. With studies at Beckmans Design School, he conquered the fashion world in the 1960s. In the following decade, he became a prominent name in the entertainment scene of Stockholm. Herrgård was also the man behind the unisex suit, a type of overall intended for versatile use.
So, when Stockholms Auktionsverk Magasin 5 now presents the theme of Sighsten Herrgård, we catch a glimpse of both Swedish fashion history and contemporary Swedish history. All the lots in this theme come from the designer's own studio. Pay special attention to the two items with sketches and clothing patterns, containing a multitude of samples from one of Sweden's most internationally renowned fashion designers.
