This collection of predominately English porcelain was the passionate hobby of Professor John Hinton (1926-2016). A senior consultant and head of department at one of London’s major teaching hospitals, he carried a heavy workload and responsibility for patients, staff and students. At weekends he allowed himself a complete change, with family day trips to the countryside of southern England were punctuated by his forays into antique shops, fairs and markets. His interest in English Porcelain began in the 1950s, though he made most purchases during the 1960s and 1970s, usually buying just one or two items at a time. The approach he took in many ways reflected that of his work, and of his personality – careful examination, research and analysis of every piece culminated in the preparation a neat hand-written record card for each item detailing, with drawings, its features, identity, estimated age, source and the price he paid for it. Most exciting was when he found something matching other pieces he already held, thus enabling him to compile collections within the collection. He pictured times when porcelain was in daily use and only stopped actively collecting when his own life started moving into a different phase.
