Oriental Rugs and Textiles is a rich cultural heritage of hand-knotted rugs and textiles from the Middle East, Central Asia and parts of North Africa. On display are textile objects that reflect centuries of tradition, artistic expression and technical skill, from Persian silk carpets to Turkish kelims, Afghan wool rugs and colourful Caucasus carpets.
Particularly popular in textiles and oriental rugs are often:
● Persian carpets from Iran, known for their intricate patterns and rich colours. Cities such as Isfahan, Tabriz and Nain have long been centers of this craft.
● Turkish carpets, also called Anatolian carpets, characterised by geometric patterns and robust construction. The region of Ushak is particularly known for its quality carpets.
● Afghan rugs, often with deep red tones and traditional motifs, representing a combination of nomadic and village-based weaving traditions.
● Kilim carpets, flat-woven textiles without pile, often used as wall hangings or floor decorations.
These rugs are not only functional but also works of art that tell stories about the cultures they come from. Many are hand-knotted using natural dyes and materials such as wool or silk.
