Black ruts in wet snow. You can almost feel the moisture and hear the clattering sound of a car driving forward on the muddy road. Silhouettes of dark fir trees in a snow-white landscape undulate like a cardiogram. Tomasz Tatarczyk's works evoke a physical sensation and convey an experience of sound and presence. The palette is reduced to black and white tones and the motifs are cropped so that it becomes almost abstract compositions.

Tomasz Tatarczyk (Poland, 1947—2010) is known for his contemplative works based on careful observations of his immediate surroundings. Studies of a closed gate, roads, hills, canyons and water turn into stills in an ongoing story where the focus is on the experience of a close contact with nature. In his almost monochrome works he wanted to capture reality but also a reflective meditative state. The rhythmic brushstroke, in which he builds up a surface and texture with small short brushstrokes, reinforces this appropriation. His paintings, which often appear dark and melancholic at first glance, reveal on closer inspection a deeper reflection on human existence and the eternal cycles of nature.
Born in Katowice in 1947, Tatarczyk began his studies at Warsaw University of Technology where he studied from 1966 to 1972. Subsequently, he continued his artistic education at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw from 1976 to 1981, where he studied under Jan Tarasin's direction. During the period 1980—1988 he served as an assistant in the Academy's painting faculty. Tatarczyk divided his time between Warsaw and his house near Kazimierz, where nature and landscape became his natural source of inspiration.

Tatarczyk is regarded as one of the most significant contemporary artists in Poland and he made his debut in 1984 at the legendary Galeria Foksal in Warsaw. In 2008 he received The Jan Cybis Award.
