Biography

Hans Jørgen Wegner was born in 1914 in Tønder, Denmark, and during his lifetime, he was one of Denmark's most influential designers. His designs, which remain highly relevant today, are frequently found in both Swedish and international homes.

"The Wishbone Chair," designed in 1949.

Wegner has been called the master of the chair, having designed over 500 different chairs.

Hans J. Wegner began his career as a cabinetmaker. His great interest in design led him to move to Copenhagen, where he studied at the Copenhagen School of Arts and Crafts. He later trained as an architect.

He also worked with Arne Jacobsen, and together they designed the Aarhus City Hall. Arne Jacobsen and Erik Møller were responsible for the architecture, while Wegner designed the furniture.

Wegner placed high demands on comfort and ergonomics. To him, a chair was not just a piece of furniture but a work of art meant to support the human form.

In 1943, he founded his own design studio, where he later created one of his most renowned works, the popular Wishbone Chair, also known as the Y-Chair. Today, the chair is considered a design icon and is frequently seen in both Scandinavian and international homes.

Wegner collaborated closely for many years with the Danish manufacturer Carl Hansen & Søn.

Hans J. Wegner's works are represented in nearly every major design museum worldwide.
