James Coignard (1925–2008) was a French painter, printmaker, and sculptor. As a self-taught artist, he developed an independent visual language that combines influences of European modernism with a poetic, symbolic formal language. He gained international recognition particularly as a master of carborundum etching, whose relief-like surfaces he frequently combined with collage elements. His multi-layered compositions of text fragments, signs, and intense coloration give his works an unmistakable expressive power. Since the 1950s, Coignard exhibited worldwide; his works are now held in numerous significant public collections, including the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, the British Museum, and the Bibliothèque nationale de France.
Minor wear consistent with age and use.
