The artist's family

Ernst Söderberg was born in Hamburg in 1889. He began as a decorative painter in Germany in 1904,
studied at the Kunstgewerbeschule in Hamburg 1908-09 and worked on monumental projects
under Wilhelm Köppen in Munich 1912-14. During the First World War, he came to Stockholm, where
he became a student of Carl Wilhelmson in 1916. A year later, he studied at Valand in Gothenburg. This was
followed by studies at the Royal Swedish Academy of Fine Arts 1921-24, studies that were awarded the Chancellor's Medal in 1923 and
the Royal Medal in 1924.
That Ernst Söderberg was seen as a great artistic promise is also evident from the fact that the Academy of Fine Arts subsequently
awarded him the Kinmanson Scholarship in 1925 and the Beskow Scholarship in 1926. During the years 1927-30
he also held the special fund's travel scholarship, which he used for stays in Italy, France
and Spain 1926-29. In the latter year, 1929, he executed the auction's painting "Edit, Mallorca nyåret
1929", where he has lovingly captured his wife Edit in full concentration. The two had married in 1925.

Among Ernst Söderberg's other portraits, the 1930 portrait of fellow artist
Thor Fagerkvist can be mentioned.
Ernst Söderberg had solo exhibitions in, among other places, Hamburg 1916, Stockholm 1930, Uppsala
1935, Västerås 1935, Norrköping and Linköping 1936 as well as Luleå, Umeå, Östersund and Borås 1937.
He is represented at the Moderna Museet and the museums in Eskilstuna, Västerås and Borås.
