Walter Arno (1930-2005), Haus des Denkers, oil on hardboard, 1998, signed and dated, dated and titled again on the reverse, approx. 60 x 50 cm, with frame approx. 70 x 60.5 cm.
Walter Arno was born in Stettin and his original name was Arno Walter Beckmann. He later dropped the name 'Beckmann' (due to the proximity to Max Beckmann). He studied painting in Berlin-Weißensee, and from 1948 at the University of the Arts in West Berlin. From 1950 he was a master student of Georg Tappert and from 1953 of Carl Hofer. He initially worked as a sculptor and in 1958 he received a teaching position at the State Academy of Fine Arts in Hamburg. In addition to his independent works, which he regularly presented in exhibitions, he was known for his commissions in public and sacred spaces – particularly in Schleswig-Holstein, Hamburg, and Lower Saxony.
