Lars Tunbjörk (1956-2015) began his career as a press photographer at Borås Tidning in the early 1970s. He eventually moved to Stockholm and received assignments for, among others, Aftonbladet, Stockholms-Tidningen, and Dagens Arbete. Tunbjörk had his major breakthrough as an artist with the photo series “Landet utom sig” in the early 1990s. Through this photo project and book, he became one of Sweden's most famous and beloved photographers. Tunbjörk depicts the remnants of the Swedish welfare state; people at campsites, shopping centers, and department stores. In the midst of everyday life and ongoing existence. The images lean towards the absurd and are full of humor and melancholy. His work became trendsetting, and a “Tunbjörkare” became a recognized term. His work came to influence our way of seeing and inspired both filmmakers and photographers worldwide.

Tunbjörk alternated projects in Sweden with assignments abroad, and he worked for, among others, The New York Times, Time, and Le Monde. His work has been shown in exhibitions in Sweden, including at Moderna Museet, as well as internationally in Tokyo, Paris, and New York.
