Description

Signed.
Frame dimensions 36x43 cm.

History:
Deutschland (later renamed Lützow) was a German Deutschland-class ship that served in the German Kriegsmarine before and during the Second World War. The ship was originally classified as a Panzerschiff ("armoured ship") by Germany. The Kriegsmarine reclassified it as a heavy cruiser in February 1940. The British originally nicknamed these three ships in this class "pocket battleships" because their armament was significantly more powerful than any other cruiser in any other fleet.

The ship was severely damaged by British bombs during an air raid on 16 April 1945, while anchored in the Kaiserfahrt canal at the port of Swinemünde. After salvage and provisional repair work, the ship's artillery participated in the battles for Stettin against the Red Army and was sabotaged in the harbour by the German crew on the night of 5 May 1945. The wreck was finally sunk by the Soviet Navy in the Baltic Sea in 1947.
