Intaglio print
30.2x22 cm plate mark.

With inscription (in the plate): "Sacada y gravada del Quadro original de D. Diego Velázquez que existe en el R. Palacio de Madrid, por D. Fran.co Goya Pintor, año de 1778. Representa á Esopo el Fabulador de la estatura natural" (sic)

According to information available on the Goya Foundation website, three editions of this print are known: the first printed in black ink, the second in greyish sepia, and the third in dark brown ink.

The original plate by Goya is preserved at the Calcografía Nacional (cat. 165), and the oil painting by Velázquez is at the Museo Nacional del Prado (cat. P001206),

Provenance: the piece was acquired at Sotheby's (Madrid) on November 19, 1986. Invoice attached.
