GUNNAR CYRÉN. Self-portrait.
5061225. GUNNAR CYRÉN. Self-portrait.

Description

Charcoal on paper, 26 x 17 cm, including frame 54 x 44 cm. Signed Cyrén.

Gunnar Cyrén is primarily known as a glass artist and silversmith. Among his most famous works are the Pop glasses from the late 1960s and the Nobel service glassware and cutlery from 1991. Among his public works is the gilded cross he created in connection with the partial reconstruction of the fire-damaged Trönö new church, which was rededicated in 2001.

Although Gunnar Cyrén was a glass artist and silversmith, drawing formed the foundation of his artistry. In his drawings, he could explore the ideas that were later realized in other materials. That he was a skilled draftsman is evident in the self-portrait at auction, where he manages to convey volume, life, and movement with minimal means.

Gunnar Cyrén is represented at, among others, the Nationalmuseum, Länsmuseet Gävleborg (where he has his own gallery), the Röhsska Museum, the Nordic Museum, the British Museum, the Victoria and Albert Museum, and the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
