Niels Mandrup Bruun was a Danish painter, draughtsman and graphic artist born in Ribe and a graduate of Ribe Katedralskole in 1938. He later joined the resistance movement, which forced him to flee to Sweden in 1944, where he lived for a period in Uppsala with the painter and sculptor Bror Hjorth. He facilitated contact with the Stockholm Academy of Fine Arts, where Niels Bruun was admitted as a student under Professor Sven Erixson.
After the war, Niels Bruun was able to return to Denmark, where he was admitted to the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen.
He studied under Aksel Jørgensen, Elof Risebye and Vilhelm Lundstrøm, and Aksel Jørgensen in particular had an influence on his artistic work.
Painted in an expressionist idiom, often mixed with some abstraction.
A part of his production shows motifs from his home region of Ribe and the marsh landscape by which he was strongly inspired.
Is represented at Ribe Kunstmuseum.
