Gerd Miller, née Fridén, grew up in Vasastan, Stockholm, but her schooling was abruptly interrupted. Already at the age of fourteen, she was forced to leave school after contracting tuberculosis, which led to a long stay in a sanatorium.
Despite this, she came to find her way in art. In the early 1940s she studied at the Welamsson School of Art and Illustration in Stockholm, and soon began to get assignments as an illustrator. Her pictures were published in weekly magazines and books, and from the late 1940s and until the 1960s she was affiliated with the Weekly Revue. Thereafter, she continued to work as a freelance, with studio in her home.
During the early 1950s, Miller spent some time in New York, where she studied at the Art Students League. In 1952, she married American Bob Miller, an art historian and former fighter aviator in Europe during World War II.
Miller illustrated short stories and serials for well-known magazines such as Allers, Husmother, Year-Round, and Ladies' World. She also created book covers, including for Åhlén & Åkerlunds förlag. In addition to this, she worked for English and French fashion magazines, including Elle, and was often hired as a fashion, comic and pattern cartoonist.
