PETER HOWELL (1932-2024). 'HORSE DERBY'.
4934585. PETER HOWELL (1932-2024). 'HORSE DERBY'.

Description

Signed lower left, oil on canvas,
62cm x 76cm (75cm x 90cm including frame).

*This Peter Howell oil was bought at his second exhibition in 1969. He had worked with horses in various training yards around Newmarket so, with his artistic wife Joanna (descendant of portraitist Alfred Newland Smith), decided that the home of British flat racing was the perfect venue to exhibit. They rented Newmarket Memorial Hall during the week-long Tattersalls December sales, thus ensuring the town would be full of racing folk from all over the world.

Since then, in his late 30s, he has exhibited in London, New York and many horse racing areas, particularly Saratoga, South Carolina and Toronto. Among collectors of his work have been countless owners and trainers including racing "royalty" such as the great Derby winner Mill Reef's trainer Ian Balding, who would have been saddened when Howell died a couple of years ago. Balding died in January this year.

**All proceeds of this sale will be given to Racing Welfare.
