Day dimensions 20 x 26,5. Frame dimensions 34,5 x 39 cm.
The current work shows a coastal motif that is clearly linked to Einar Palme's well-known pictures of the archipelago, probably inspired by environments such as Sandhamn where he worked regularly. In the foreground lies a maroon sailboat moored in still waters, while several masts rise vertically through the image surface, creating a rhythmic structure. In the background are low-rise buildings and greenery, dissolved in a soft, atmospheric light.
The composition is open and airy. The tall masts divide the picture space into vertical fields, contrasting with the horizontal waterline and the soft shapes of the coast. The red boat acts as a coloristic center and gives anchor to the whole. The brush movement is free and sketchy, with quick, visible strokes that capture movement in the water's surface and the light sway of the sail.
Einar Palme 1901—1993 worked as a painter, cartoonist and graphic artist with a special focus on landscapes, portraits and marinas. He was born in Höganäs in 1901 and first studied architecture at the University of Technology from 1920 to 1922. After that he switched to painting and was a pupil of Carl Wilhelmson from 1922 to 1923. He also studied drawing and graphics in Vienna and with André Lhote in Paris, which gave him an international orientation combined with a strong grounding in the Swedish painting tradition.
Palme's early painting was characterized by an impressionistically held, light and blond colorite with a focus on atmosphere and the action of light. In later periods, the expression became more naturalistic with a somewhat strident and subdued color gamut. The motifs were often drawn from coastal environments, especially Sandhamn, whose harbours, sailboats and archipelago landscapes came to be recurring themes. His mariner is characterized by a confident perception of space and an interest in weather, water and light conditions.
As a cartoonist and graphic artist, he worked with dry needling and etching, depicting cities and environments with a combination of precision and sense of mood. Through study trips to Lofoten, Paris, England, Cuba and Mexico, he expanded his subject register and deepened his understanding of different types of light and landscape.
Palme is represented at several significant institutions, including Nationalmuseum, Moderna museet, Norrköping Art Museum and Brooklyn Museum. His artistry combines international impulses with a clear Swedish landscape tradition and constitutes a consistent and long-lasting contribution to 20th century Swedish painting.
